The Goierri region is made up of 18 different municipalities, of which Beasain, Ordizia and Lazkao are the most well-known. Idiazabal country
Gastronomy is an important part of life in the Goierri region, where Idiazabal and Ordizia are particularly well-known for their produce. While Idiazabal lends it name to the famed cheese that wins countless prizes at the World Cheese Awards every year, Ordizia is known for its weekly market on Wednesdays. The biggest market in the Basque Country, it has been held in the same place for the last five centuries.
The Basque Highlands
When visiting the Basque Highlands, don’t miss the Aizkorri-Aratz Interpretation Centre in Zegama and the Aralar Interpretation Centre in Lizarrusti (Ataun) which includes a children’s adventure park.
Five TIPS
- Visit a shepherd/cheesemaker and see how the local Idiazabal cheese is made.
- Attend a Txakoli, cider or wine tasting, or try some paired with cheese.
- Visit one of the cider houses which are open all year.
- Visit the Medieval Town of Segura or the Cultural Centre in Zerain.
