TXAKOLI WINERY

In the early 19th century Txakoli wine was made in the farmhouse to drink with family and friends. More recently this wine has seen a boom in popularity, with over two million bottles produced each year, many exported to some of the world’s finest restaurants. This light, refreshing, slightly sparkling white wine is grown under the appellation of origin ‘Getariako Txakolina’. Txakoli wineries are generally located near the coast surrounded by lush sloping vineyards. The unique txakoli culture and beautiful scenery have become a popular draw for visitors.

Learn how this young wine is made, explore the beautiful coastal towns of Zarautz and Getaria, and have lunch in a spectacular winery. Starting at €125.

TOLOSA MARKET

Saturday is the best day to visit Tolosa. The Tolosa market, held every Saturday for centuries, is considered one of the most traditional farmers’ markets in the Basque Country. Local farmers, or baserritarras as they’re known in Basque, bring their season fresh products to sell at the Tinglado, Tolosa’s riverside market. The entire town centre fills with a festive atmosphere, music and the hustle and bustle of vendors and shoppers.

After visiting the market, enjoy a traditional Tolosa bean stew at Restaurante Botarri. Served with pickled peppers from the neighboring town of Ibarra, black pudding and chorizo. Includes dessert, a choice of Rioja Alavesa wine, txakoli, cider or water, and coffee. Starting at €30

AND IF YOU’D RATHER USE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION AND DO IT AT YOUR OWN PACE, PURCHASE A ‘BASQUE CARD’.
